LANGUAGE CORNER: THEY OR THEY’RE

They’re and their are among the most commonly confused words and, therefore, we think it would be useful to remind ourselves how to differentiate them properly.

A part of the problem is that their and they’re are pronounced the same way.

Their is a pronoun, as in “their cat is black” or “their son is lazy”. Their is possessive, meaning it’s a word that shows who or what something  belongs to and it indicates ownership. On the other hand, they’re is a contraction of “they are”, as in “they’re getting engaged”.

That would be simplest way to mentally compartmentalise these words.
